Spitting up but acting hungry??

Should I still let her nurse? 5 week old. She'll cry and be rooting a little. But I've fed her so much and she spit up a couple times. Not a ton. But if she wants to nurse should I feed her more? Or try to hold off? Tia!

@chrisi7,

I've been having the same problem... Curious to hear what others say.

@chrisi7,

When baby latches back on, does she stay on and actively eat or pull off? Baby might want to comfort suck after eating. My daughter does this after spitting up and won't stay latched. I give her a pacifier and she'll suck on it a few minutes then spit it out and be happy.

Could be reflux.

Just a thought to look into.

Hopefully not :-)

Watch her jaw. If she's pumping it hard & swallowing, she's still hungry. If she's just sort of moving nipple in her mouth, she's just being comforted. Sometimes they'll spit up, not becuz they're too full but becuz there is milk on top of an air bubble so when the bubble rises up, it takes the milk on top for a ride.

Supposedly, the breast also changes flow to a slower thinner stream as baby should be getting full so it's supposed to be ok to just keep them on if you want becuz you won't be over stuffing them.

Spit up can be a normal part part of babyhood. It's not like when an adult throws up and should avoid eating until feeling better, babies spit up because of their immature digestive system allowing milk to flow back up. Gas can make spit up worse because when a bubble comes up any milk on top of the bubble comes up too. Frequent burping can help. But it's always ok to offer the breast again after spitting up if lo is still rooting.

@MarchMomma,

Spit up is only a concern if it interferes with weight gain or causes lo pain (acid reflux burns lo's throat on the way up.

@chrisi7,

Thanks everyone! Very helpful. She's not in pain and she's 10 and a half lbs at 5 weeks so weight gain is not an issue :-) She does suck pretty hard hit a bit and then just goes to comfort nursing. So I guess it's all good. I couldn't deny her last night but all seems to be good. Thanks!!!
